AirCanada has been founded as a subsidiary of the Canadian National Railway, which beared the name Trans-Canada Airlines (TCA) in former times. In the same year the airline launched their first commercial flight from Vancouver to Seattle flying only two passengers and mail on a 50min flight operated with the Lockheed 10A. In 1949 the headquarter has been moved from Winnipeg to Montreal, where it still is today.
The airline bought their first big amount of aircraft in 1983, being an order of 34 Airbus A320`s, which the airline still uses. One of the “milestones” of civil aviation industry has been first introduced by the canadian airline; not permitting smoking mid-flight.
In 1997 Air Canada has together with Lufthansa, United Airlines, Thai Airways and SAS founded the first Airline Alliance called Star Alliance.
