After the second world war the Brazilian government decided to build up their own aviation industry and the Centro Técnico de Aeronáutica (CTA) has been founded in Sao Jose dos Campos, being ruled by the military. The German engineer Heinrich Focke has in the 1950`s been asked to help out with his engineering team and designed multiple Helicopters.
In 1965 the project IPD-6504 has been started, which is today known as the Embraer EMB 110. This has been the first try to manufacture a small propeller aircraft by the CTA. Three years later the Bandeirante first took off for its maiden flight.
1969 the government founded the Empresa Brasileira de Aeronáutica ( Embraer), which started off with 50 employees manufacturing the Bandeirante. The company began to grow fast and was selling many aircraft to the military, but also started to assemble Piper aircraft for the market in South America under license in 1974.
During the government of Itamar Franco many Brazilian state-run companies have been privatized. Embraer was sold in December 1994.
Only a short time after that the company has announced to begin the engineering of business and small commercial jets for both civil aviation and military use.
In April 1997 Embraer annouced the ERJ145 Family, which has had its maiden flight the year before. In 2002 the very first coperate jet, the Legacy 600 has been introduced, two years later then being followed by the E-Jet together with its first customer LOT from Poland.
The E-Jet Family has by far been the best selling jet of Embraer with over 1200 aircraft sold.
In May 2016 the E-Jet V2 first took off for its maiden flight. Embraer is developing a new version of the famous E-Jets, featuring new avionics, new wings, new engines and an enhanced fly-by-wire system. The introduction is scheduled for 2018.
