Talking about the european airport with the best traffic nearly every spotter will have the same answer: London Heathrow!
With 76Million passengers and 474,963 aircaft movements London Heathrow is Europe`s largest airport and the number 7 in passengers movements worldwide. Every 45seconds a plane will land or take-off on from of the two runways, but a clever system to seperate landing aircraft from departing ones allows the air traffic control to manage 1400flights a day, by using one runway for arrivals and the other one for depatures and changing the runway in use at exactly 3pm. This does also have the great effect for spotters, that you will always know where a specific aircraft will land; after 7am. From 5:30am, when the first aircraft are allowed to land until 7am nearly no flights are leaving Heathrow and allowing to use both runways for landing.
Heathrow is not the only airport in/near London though. In History the government has opened loads of RAF bases and airports for defending themselves in WW2. Heathrow, Luton, Stansted and Gatwick were transformed into commercial airports, while in 1987 the completely new built London City Airport was opened being mainly used for buisness travelers ever since. Of those 6 airports Gatwick is the second biggest one and also (in my eyes) the most interesting one, in terms of traffic. As I was in London for 5days in total it was no question to visit it as well.
At this point i want to quickly mention my friends Max and Eddie, who have accompanied me and also want to thank the cool guys from the Netherlands, Portugal, England, Italy and France, who i have met there, for the great time! Cheers!
I was trying to finish this trip with a small selection of aircraft, but as I`ve exported a first selection i was looking at a total of 200pictures.
